ELAZAR'S OLIVE OIL LAMPSElazar's Olive Oil Lamps are made of copper and bronze by Paloma in Longview, Washington. She uses only fire, welding rod and water for the fire patina coloration making each lamp unique. We don't polish our copper because fine particles are generated in the process of polishing. Fine copper particles find their way into the ground water and eventually make it to the ocean, killing algae and zoo plankton.Much marine life and world oxygen production is generated by zoo plankton and algae. Keeping copper in its natural finish and not polishing it prevents this from happening. No chemicals are used nor do the lamps create any, earning us an approved symbol from Green Certified Business by Co-Op America. The trick is in the wick! Copper, cotton and olive oil. It couldn't be simpler and no fear of lead. Vegans love them! Olive oil won't burn until it reaches 550 F, which is higher than any other fuel. This is why Elazar's Olive Oil Lamps do not produce smoke, soot or smell. If they spill, they put themselves out. People with asthma, chemical sensitivities and worse can safely burn them. Each wick burns three times brighter than a candle.Elazar's Olive Oil Lamps are safer, cheaper and cleaner than candles or petroleum based lamps oils. You can even burn them in a sauna.Several of the lamps are also made to be used as aromatherapy diffusers. Elazar’s Olive Oil Lamp Hints and Instructions Copper, cotton, paper, and olive oil -it couldn’t be simpler -and no fear of lead!Olive oil won’t burn until it reaches 550° F which is higher than any other fuel. This is why Elazar’s Oil Lamps do not produce any smoke, soot, or smell. If they spill they put themselves out. People with asthma chemical sensitivities and worse can safely use them –and the wicks burn three times brighter than a candle. TO USE: 1.Fill the lamp with any grade unflavored olive oil. DO NOT POUR IT ON THE SCREEN! 2.Dip a cotton swab in the olive oil. Twist the oiled end off of the swab’s stick and shape it like a teardrop. 3.Flatten the round end of the cotton with your thumbnail and set it gently on the screen. DO NOT PUSH THE SCREEN DOWN! 4.Light the fine fiber tip. The wick will burn over 24 hours if there is enough olive oil in the lamp. A ½ oz of olive oil will burn 3 hours with a typical sized wick. Care, Maintenance and Start Up tips: SMOKE: The wick may smoke a little at first but, as long as the tip is not overly large, this should soon dissipate. SHORT BURN TIME: Should the wick fail to burn for more than 30 minutes or so, draw some oil up through the stem using your mouth or a the rubber bulb of an eye-dropper. EXTINGUISHING: To prevent smoldering and smoke, use a few drops of oil to extinguish the flame. CLEANING: If you wish to clean the lamp, carefully remove the screen with a pin and replace the paper towel with a piece the same size as that you removed, then put the screen back in. The toweling should be the same height as the tube and fit loosely. To clean the copper, try 1 pkg. of unsweetened Kool Aid, 1 tsp. salt, and ¼ cup water. NEVER BURN ESSENTIAL OILS! Do not leave olive oil in the lamp for long periods of time if you are not burning it –it will turn to varnish. |
